Hoofbeats BioHoofbeats of Special Kids is developed out of a deep appreciation for the horse and a love of children with special needs. Hoofbeats seeks to make a difference in the daily lives of physically, mentally or emotionally challenged children by encouraging confidence, self-esteem and independence through recreational and therapeutic riding.
An instructor certified by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association, conducts lessons designed to be recreational and benificial. Our instructor coordinates with a team of therapists in order to use all aspects of riding from grooming and tacking, to general horse care with various riding styles which helps our special kids reach their goals. While grooming and tacking their horses riders may work on several gross, fine motor and cognitive skills. Some of these skills include hand-eye coordination, short and long-term memory skills and bilateral use of upper extremities. Because riding gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body similiar to the human gait, riders with physical disablilities often show improvements in flexibility, balance and muscle strength. Riders will also learn social skills as they interact with volunteers, other riders and horses.
The unique bond formed between between horse and rider can help to increase self esteem, boost confidence and improve social skills. As they work toward their individual goals we are sure they experience one more aspect or riding: It is FUN!

A Poem from Janet STallings, Hoofbeats Volunteer
The Sound of Hoofbeats
You struggled, very determined,
To cross the lawn to where I was standing
Slight and fragile of nature
you are unsure of the massive and mighty force before you
Your eyes enourmous as you look upon me, your miraculous gift.
I have been chosen to empower you
I lower my stature to you, how weak,
You are placed upon my back,
We rise, full of power.
I give you strength with firm, unfaltering steps.
I give you courage for living,
A spirit majestic and totally freeing
As I carry you, all that can be heard
Over the two hearts pulstating like one
Are the sound of Hoofbeats.
Please help our Hoofbeats Program by purchasing cards.
